Chester William Nimitz: the CinCPOA who led the U.S. and Allied air,land, and sea forces

during WW II!

Chester William Nimitz (February 24,1885-February 20,1966) led a coalition of U.S. and Allied forces while serving in World War II. Ten days after the attack on Pearl Harbor, he was selected as Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet. As rapidly as men,ships, and material became available, Nimitz led the the U.S. and Allied forces to defeats over the Japanese at the Battle of the Coral Sea, the pivotal Battle of Midway, and the and the Solomon Islands Campaign. He also serves in World War 1. Nimitz from a stroke caused by pneumonia in 1965, but died a year later in 1966.
