Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar, a.k.a.; El Cid (1043-1099) conquered Valencia by sacking town after town to do so. In 1090, in Barcelona at the Battle of Tebar, he captured Berenguer, who later married Rodrigo's youngest daughter to avoid further conflict. El Cid then conquered Valencia, which was ruled by Al-Qadir. An uprising by the Almoravids led to the siege of Valencia. In December 1093, an attempt to break up the siege failed. By 1094, El Cid had a principality off the coast of the Carribean. The city had Christian and Muslim leaders that united as administrators. He and his wife Dona are buried in the Burgos Cathedral.
