Philopoemen: the Greek general who the Romans claimed to be "the last of the Greeks"!

Philopoemen (253-183 BC) helped turn the Achaean League into a perennial military powerhouse. In 188 BC, Philopoemen entered northern Laconia with Spartan exiles and his Greek army. He led in the restoration of Spartan citizenship to the exiled Spartans. Eventually Sparta's role as a major power in Greece ended, whilw the Achaean League became the dominant power in the Peloponnese. Philopoemen was cartured by Dinocrates and his Messeneans, where he drank poison and died an honourable death.
